Cocoa Tree

The scientific name of the cocoa tree, Theobroma cacao, literally means ‚Drink of the Gods’. Native to tropical South America, the cocao tree requires a warm, humid climate. In the wild, these trees can attain a height of 15 m or more. The green, yellow or maroon-colored waxy pods from which cocao beans are harvested grow by the thousands on the trunk and mature branches of the cocao tree. The plant is able to withstand flooding, but cannot survive in stagnant water, because its roots need good circulation of water and air. Soil should be deep, around 1.5 m, rich in humus and soft. The cocoa tree is sensitive to wind, and the young plants need lots of shade.
